The series of weapon evolutions is a concept that I started to create while learning pixelart. In addition to the visual, I also give a story to each weapon that justifies the way they evolve. Who knows, maybe one day some of these weapons will appear in one of my games, in the meantime I display them here, it’s a bit like a museum.

They are all made in 16×16 pixels, as they might appear on Game Boy Color for example. I will post a small batch periodically. Here are those for February and March.

#1 – Healing staff

Description : The magic within the crystal intensifies ever more with each stage, making it bigger and brighter. Its great healing power would come from the fact that the geode from which the crystal was harvested would have absorbed the magical residue of a Unicorn having taken up residence there. If the power of the crystal is overstretched, it tarnishes more and more and begins to crack, until it finally shatters into a thousand pieces. So you have to know how to use it wisely.

#2 – Fire Sword

Description : Forged from the fire of a volcano, the blade radiates more and more as it grows. Its temperature rises to the point that a flame eventually forms all around it. Some even report the existence of a new final form after having immersed one of them in the lava while it had reached its maturity. Unfortunately the weapon melts during this process and no technique yet manages to preserve it, which makes it an ephemeral version.

#3 – Tracking bow

Description : Created in an enchanted wood by an elf using a specific manufacturing process, it projects an arrow that shoots towards the target, adjusting its trajectory better and better as the weapon evolves. At the end, the arrow no longer misses its target. Only a few copies of this bow exist and they are notably preserved in the greatest secrecy by the wood elves. Notable use was made of it by the elven prince Wilwarin when he shot down the great cyclops Rocar the Fool with an arrow through the eye.

#4 – Lightning axe

Description : A weapon from the northern lands. The first to appear was when a lumberjack was struck by lightning along with the tree he was trying to cut down. It is referred to as a weapon of divine anger that arises only from a sacrifice offered to the gods. Each blow with the weapon produces a thunderclap and delivers a substantial electrical charge.

#5 – Cursed Shield

Description : It is unknown how the demon got trapped inside. The merchant who sold the shield said to hold it from a grave robber who sold it to him at a derisory as he was in such a hurry to get rid of it. The demonic facial expression changes periodically for some reason. Sometimes it’s sadness, sometimes happiness. At times it seems as if the shield is whispering and some report that they have been driven mad by it.

#6 – Poisoned Dagger

Description : A bud has grown from the handle of the dagger, giving way to a poisonous plant that has grown wrapping around the handle and giving the blade a poisonous edge. At the final stage, a snake transformation took place and the poison became deadly. Many kings and emperors perished by a weapon of this type. However, all the assassins who hesitated in their act also succumbed to it, because the snake bites the hand which carries it, if the blood which was promised was not offered to him.

#7 – Frozen flail

Description : The metal in this weapon has crystallized from the very low temperatures of the far north. The most notable examples that have been recorded were very large flails used by the ogres of the north when they go hunting. Even a blow from the side is enough to imprison the leg of the prey in the ice, or to numb its movements. It can be used in two steps. The first hit can freeze all or part of the target. The second blow can shatter what is frozen.

#8 – Whip of Love (or Nolwenn’s Whip)

Whip of Love pixelart

Description : The origin of this weapon goes back to the day when Lord Rodric of Paladia – Knight of the Order of the Lion – brought back from one of his expeditions in the East a magnificent rose, which he presented to Lady Nolwenn. After having again been absent for a time which was long and painful for the two lovers, he noticed that the stem of the rose had grown a lot and sported an appearance both sinister and bewitching, while his lady was bedridden, suffering from a strange disease that weakened her more and more. Seeing a threat to his bride, he decided to cut the rose cleanly with his zweihänder. It faded immediately. Unfortunately, the one he loved so much died at the same time. Since that day it has also been called “Nolwenn’s Whip”. Its smell becomes more and more sweet and pleasant as it develops, unlike its stem which develops very painful brambles.

# 9 – Rhino hammer

Description : The mace was crafted from a block of granite taken from an ancient mithril mine, long since abandoned by the dwarves. The transformation of the weapon is said to be due to exposure to various dwarven enchantments the rock face undergoes during its exploitation. It is so named because of its shape which is reminiscent of a rhinoceros head. In addition to the aesthetic side, the destructive power of the earth has been conferred on it. This also gives it the particularity of causing sudden earthquakes during a controlled impact. An attack also known as the “Rhinoceros telluric charge” or simply “Telluric charge”. It can thus be used in various ways, the most common of which is to force a passage during a siege.

#10 – Dragon gauntlet

Description : It has long been wondered what caused this simple knight’s gauntlet to transform into a bestial hand that made its wearer bloodthirsty and unreasonable. It was only during the battle of the Moore of Azure, which opposed men to a handful of dragons that we understood then. The only warriors to have developed this peculiarity had splatters of dragon’s blood on their glove. Corruption is then done gradually and the very idea of removing the protection is obviously useless. This is why the great massacre of the Sapphire Lands soon followed, opposing an army of men allied with the elves to destroy all the soldiers corrupted by draconic hatred.
